The International Mountain Day is an opportunity to create awareness about the importance of the mountain for life, to highlights the opportunities and limitations facing development mountainous, and create alliances who´s produce a positive change in the mountains and highlands in the World.
Covering around 22 percent of the earth’s land surface, mountains play a critical role in moving the world towards sustainable economic growth. They not only provide sustenance and wellbeing to 915 million mountain people around the world, representing 13 percent of global population, but mountains also indirectly benefit billions more living downstream.

In the mountains also springs of water and rivers are born, and they have been venerated always by the deities that reside in its heights.
This year, the celebration focuses on highlighting the importance of the cultures and traditions that host the mountains. They are places of religious worship, pilgrimages and rituals. The concepts of tradition, culture and spirituality are intrinsically linked to the livelihoods of mountain people. Their traditional lifestyles determine their livelihoods.
