The Certificate for Sustainable Tourism – CST – is a program of the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), designed to categorize and differentiate tourism companies according to the degree to which their operation is close to a sustainability model, in terms of the management of Natural, cultural and social resources.
This award is granted by the National Accreditation Commission in Costa Rica.
When and why does it begins?
Sustainability, as a model for development, raises the need to sustain the current requirements of society, without compromising the right of future generations to meet theirs. This means that the development of the country cannot be based on excessive exploitation of resources (natural, cultural, social, etc.) to the point of exhausting or destroying them, with the aim of covering the current (Food, housing, health, employment, etc.), because this same resource base is the only platform, or potential asset, that the future generations of this country have in order to satisfy their own needs.
For tourism, sustainability means a form of activity development that solves current industry risk situations and avoids the dynamics of growth that are generating economic, social, cultural and ecological imbalances. This definition in operative terms, results in a balanced interaction of three basic factors of the tourist industry:
- The proper use of our natural and cultural resources.
- Improvement of the quality of life of local communities.
- Economic success, which may contribute to other national development programs.
JACAMAR NATURALIST TOURS is a Tour Operator who is concerned about the impact of the tours, activities and services offered. We recognize our responsibility to operate in a way that represents a positive contribution to the natural, cultural and social environment.
We also recognize our responsibility to operate in ways that reduce environmental impact, benefit local communities, safeguard livelihoods, and ensure the protection of natural resources for future populations. Therefore, we are certified before the Costa Rican Tourism Institute and we have 5 levels and we are committed to ensuring the proper management of natural resources.
